What type
of web hosting should I look for?
Before
looking into the various types of web hosting solutions it is
useful to understand what is the meaning of web host.
To have
a Web site on the Internet you first need to have a Web server.
A web server is a special computer connected to Internet where
your web site's files reside. The visitors of your web site must
actually connect to the web server via the Internet to see your
web files. Unfortunately, owning a Web server can be very costly
and requires technical expertise that most persons don't have.
For a monthly fee Web Hosting companies rent out space on a web
server (or they can rent you also a complete server) connecting
in this way your web site to the Internet at high speed through
one of their web servers. They provide you with high-speed Internet
connection, tools for managing and maintaining your web site,
technical assistance and customer support, additional features
(e-commerce solutions for instance) and many other services. Thanks
to a web hosting company you don't have to worry about the technical
aspects and to loose time maintaining your web site, you can concentrate
your time to value added activities as promoting your site and
generate traffic.
There are
many types of web hosting services. Let's take into consideration
the most important ones:
1. IPSs
and dial-up access hosting solutions
There are many ISPs on the Net. Frequently some of them offer
also web hosting services. As they main business is to offer
dial-up access it is extremely difficult to find one company
that is able to provide a good service. As this is not their
main business they have difficulties to understand the needs
of small and medium-sized businesses. On the contrary there
are some hosting companies that have started to complete their
range of services also offering high level internet connectivity.
2. Web
design and web developers' hosting
We know it happened also to you: you rent a good developer or
a small web design agency, they do a good service for you and
then they offer you to host the pages that they have just realized.
Also in this case their main business is to develop software
and not to rent web space. Furthermore this can be costly, the
service is generally limited only to office hours (9 a.m. -
5 p.m.) and of course you remain 100% dependent to them.
3. "Solo"
web hosting companies
These are specialised companies that can offer a variety of
services. They are focused completely only on web hosting and
this is where you have to look. Among the various market players
we have selected for you one that offers: virtual servers, dedicated
servers, domains registration, high end web hosting, low cost
web hosting, website creation tools, e-commerce software, secure
application hosting, web-based applications to manage your web
site, internet software and much, much more. Already interested

4. Large
and industrial hosting
If
you have a very high traffic site or you are working for a large
company you might want to talk with the large and industrial
hosting companies which provide mirror sites, redundant connections
to the Internet backbone, 24-hour
staffing and of course .... substantial
prices. If you are not yet a multinational company but you need
a top service ... you can still find it among the high end web
hosting solutions offered by the company that we selected for
you. Simply click here
Ok that's
fine. Now it is clear what type of web hosting solutions are out
there but we imagine that you are wondering: what kind of account
do I really need?
Let's try
to summarize what are the main types of accounts are offered by
the web hosting providers:
1. Shared
servers
Shared servers are an excellent solution for entry-level hosting
needs but not only, sometimes they are good also for established
e-businesses. They offer webmasters a reliable web presence
without the need to possess advanced technical skills. You share
the web presence with other web sites on the same server and
this cut considerably the costs. Among the shared servers you
typically can get three kind of accounts: non-virtual account,
fake-virtual domain and virtual domain.
Non-virtual
accounts are to avoid as you do not own a domain but a subdirectory
(http://www.yourwebhost.com/yoursite/ and if you move to another
hosting company later you need to change to get a new URL. You
don't solve the problem also with subdomains (http://www.yoursite.yourwebhost.com)
as in case you need to change you encounter the same problem.
Some hosting
companies offer what is called a fake-virtual domain account,
which is an account that shares an Internet Protocol (IP) number
with other domain names. Practically many different domains
have the same IP Protocol. This generally works fine except
with some old browsers.
The third
type, generally the best one, is the virtual domain account
where you get our own domain name (http://www.yoursite.com and
if the hosting company is really professional also http://yoursite.com).
2. Dedicated
servers
The dedicated hosting environment provides an exclusive server
or servers for your Web site and applications. With dedicated
hosting, you will benefit from higher performance, reliability
and security, easy server access and increased bandwidth to
handle spikes in visitor traffic. Dedicated hosting is ideal
for sites with a high number of visitors, confidential information
and complex Web applications such as online shopping and automated
tools.
3. Colocation
services
In a colocation arrangement, you own your own equipment
and require rented space in an Internet Data Center. You are
responsible for the equipment and applications, and the Data
Center personnel is responsible for ensuring continuous uptime
and bandwidth connections to the equipment.
